Topics & Prompts
A Topic is a question category your buyers care about. A Prompt is one specific way they'd actually ask it. You track visibility at the prompt level — topics just keep things organized.
The Data Model
A2Z Reach organizes your tracking in a simple hierarchy: each Project (your brand or product line) contains Topics, and each Topic contains Prompts. Think of it like folders and files — topics group related questions together so you can see patterns.
Project: Allbirds
└ Topic: "Best sustainable running shoes"
├ Prompt: "What are the most eco-friendly running shoes in 2026?"
├ Prompt: "Which running shoe brands use recycled materials?"
└ Prompt: "Best carbon-neutral sneakers for daily running"
└ Topic: "Comfortable work shoes"
├ Prompt: "What do podiatrists recommend for standing all day?"
└ Prompt: "Most comfortable office shoes that look professional"
Topics vs Prompts
A Topic represents a buying intent or question category — something your potential customers research before purchasing. Topics are short labels that describe what the buyer is trying to learn.
A Promptis the actual query someone would type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI. It's written in natural, conversational language — the way a real person asks a question, not the way a marketer thinks about keywords.
Writing Effective Prompts
The best prompts mirror how real buyers talk to AI. They're specific, conversational, and include context about what the person actually cares about.
- Good: "What do podiatrists recommend for flat feet running shoes?" — specific, has expert framing, sounds like a real question
- Good: "Best running shoes for marathon training under $150" — includes budget and use case
- Bad: "best running shoes" — too generic, no buyer context, won't surface meaningful insights
- Bad: "running shoes sustainable eco material wool" — keyword stuffing, nobody talks like this
Think about what your ideal customer would literally type after opening ChatGPT. That's your prompt.
How Many to Track
Start with 3–5 topics and 3–8 prompts per topic. Quality matters more than quantity — a focused set of 20 well-crafted prompts gives better strategic insight than 100 generic ones. You can always add more as you identify new angles.
Each prompt runs against multiple AI engines daily, so even a small set generates rich visibility data across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google.
Editing Topics & Prompts
Topics and prompts can be added, renamed, or archived at any time from your project dashboard. Archiving preserves historical data while removing the prompt from active tracking. A few tips:
- Rename topics freely — it's just an organizational label
- Archive prompts that are no longer relevant rather than deleting them — you keep the history
- Add new prompts when you spot gaps in your coverage or launch new products
- Review your prompt set monthly — buyer language evolves and so should your tracking
