What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of ensuring your brand, products, and content are visible and accurately represented in AI-generated answers — across platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini.

Traditional SEO

User searches: "best running shoes"

→ 10 blue links

→ User clicks one

→ You need to rank in top 10

GEO (AI Search)

User asks: "What are the best running shoes for marathon training?"

→ AI writes a narrative answer

→ Mentions 3-5 brands with reasoning

→ You need to BE IN that answer

SEO = compete for a click. GEO = compete for a mention.

A Real Example

Here's what happens when someone asks ChatGPT about running shoes:

User prompt: "What are the best sustainable running shoes in 2026?"

ChatGPT response (excerpt):

For sustainable running shoes, here are the top options:

1. Allbirds Tree Flyer — Made with eucalyptus fiber and sugarcane-based foam. Carbon-neutral certified. [tomsguide.com]

2. On Cloudrift — Uses recycled polyester and bio-based materials. [runnersworld.com]

3. Nike Pegasus 41 (Move to Zero) — 50% recycled content. [rtings.com]

In this response, Allbirds is recommended (position #1). The AI cited tomsguide.com as the backing source. If Allbirds weren't featured on Tom's Guide, they likely wouldn't appear here.

Now here's the same brand on a different prompt where they're excluded:

User prompt: "Fastest growing athletic brands 2026"

ChatGPT response (excerpt):

The fastest-growing athletic brands right now include:

1. On Running — 32% revenue growth... [reuters.com]

2. Hoka — Dominant in the max-cushion segment... [mordorintelligence.com]

3. New Balance — Strongest comeback brand... [t3.com]

❌ Allbirds not mentioned

Allbirds is excluded— not because they're bad, but because reuters.com and mordorintelligence.com (the cited sources) don't feature them in growth-category content. The fix: earn coverage in those specific publications.

GEO vs AEO — Same Thing, Different Name

You'll see both terms used: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). They refer to the same practice. GEO emphasizes the generative/AI nature of the engines. AEO emphasizes the answer/conversational format. We use GEO as the primary term.
