Exclusion Analysis

When AI recommends running shoes but doesn't mention you, exclusion analysis tells you exactly who got picked instead, why, and which websites you need to get featured on to change that.

The most valuable insight isn't knowing your visibility score — it's understanding exactly WHY you're invisible and WHAT to do about it.

What Exclusion Analysis Does

Every time an AI engine generates a response to one of your tracked prompts WITHOUT mentioning your brand, A2Z Reach captures that as an exclusion event. But we don't stop at counting. For each exclusion, we analyze:

  • Gap types: What's missing — editorial coverage, comparison presence, review authority, or content recency?
  • Winning competitors: Which brands appeared instead of you, what products they were recommended for, and what backed their inclusion
  • Target publications: The specific cited sources from that response that you need to be featured on
  • Losing dimensions: The key buying criteria the AI weighed when choosing competitors over you

How It Works

After each capture, our audit system determines:

  1. Was your brand mentioned in the response? If yes → inclusion (tracked separately)
  2. If no → exclusion analysis runs:
    • Identifies every competitor that was recommended
    • For each competitor: which source backed them? What signal placed them?
    • Diagnoses the specific gap: why wasn't your brand retrievable or credible enough?
    • Names the exact publications you need to target

Gap Types Explained

editorial_coverage
The AI cited publications (reviews, roundups, guides) that don't mention your brand. Fix: get featured in those specific publications.
comparison_presence
Comparison articles and tables that rank your category don't include you. Fix: earn inclusion in the comparison content AI trusts.
review_authority
Expert review sites cited by the AI haven't reviewed your product. Fix: pursue reviews from the specific domains cited.
content_recency
Your latest content is older than competitors', so the AI treats your brand as less current. Fix: publish fresh, dated content.
category_mismatch
The AI doesn't associate your brand with this category. Fix: create category-signal content (comparison pages, category landing pages).

Reading the Results

Exclusion data is available at three levels:

  • Asset level: Total exclusions, top competitors, top gap types — the 30,000ft view
  • Topic level: Which topics you lose on most — focus your content strategy here
  • Prompt level: The most granular — which specific questions exclude you, enabling laser-targeted fixes

The timeseries view shows trends: is your exclusion rate dropping over time as your GEO efforts take effect?

Taking Action on Exclusions

Each exclusion includes actionable intelligence:

  • Target citations: Specific URLs and domains cited in the response you were excluded from. These are the publications to target for outreach, guest posts, or PR.
  • Competitor signals: What each winning competitor has that you don't — specific products, backing sources, or positioning.
  • Suggested product: Which of your products is best positioned to compete for this query.

This turns "we're invisible" into a concrete action list: "get reviewed on runnersworld.com, publish a comparison page with Nike, and position our Tree Flyer for the marathon training category."

Free vs Paid Plans

Free users see the exclusion count and top competitor names — enough to know there's a problem. Paid plan users get the full occurrence detail, gap analysis, target citations, and dimensions — everything needed to act.
